Excessive systemic accumulations of hemosiderin may occur in macrophages in the liver, lungs, spleen, kidneys, lymph nodes, and bone marrow. These accumulations may be caused by excessive red blood cell destruction (haemolysis), excessive iron uptake/hyperferraemia, or decreased iron utilization (e.g., anaemia of copper toxicity) uptake hypoferraemia (which often leads to iron deficiency anemia).
Quantification of haemosiderin-laden macrophages in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) has been used to diagnose diffuse alveolar haemorrhage (DAH) but has not been assessed in patients with diffuse alveolar damage (DAD). The present study analysed BALF obtained from 21 patients with DAD diagnosed by surgical lung biopsy.

MENU 2009-01-19 · Our results illustrate that if PTC and Hürthle cell neoplasms are excluded, the presence of hemosiderin laden macrophages strongly supports the diagnosis of benign colloid nodule (P<0.0001). Importantly, hemosiderin was not observed in macrophages in any of the 17 follicular carcinomas in this study. Hemosiderin-laden macrophages do not appear earlier than 48 h after bleeding. Thus, very early bleeding shows only numerous red blood cells.

They are usually cleared from the alveoli and airways Feb 15, 2021 Hemosiderin-laden macrophages are white blood cells infused with lots of an iron-storing compound called hemosiderin. They are Apr 23, 2017 Phagocytic cells (of the mononuclear phagocyte system) called macrophages engulf (phagocytose) the hemoglobin to degrade it, producing May 28, 2020 What are hemosiderin laden macrophages? Phagocytic cells (of the mononuclear phagocyte system) called macrophages engulf (phagocytose) Identification of hemosiderin-laden macrophages (HLMs) in bronchoalveolar lavage, gastric aspirate, or lung biopsy tissue confirms the presence of alveolar Close. Indian J Med Microbiol. Figure 3: Cytological examination of the BAL fluid showing hemosiderin-laden macrophages.
However, large marked depositions as here reported are rare.

Seen here is ingrowth of capillaries along with fibroblasts and macrophages filled with hemosiderin. The granulation tissue seen here is found in abundance from 10 days to 3 weeks following onset of infarction, with a peak around 1 to 2 weeks. Hemosiderin or haemosiderin is an iron-storage complex. It is only found within cells and appears to be a complex of ferritin, denatured ferritin and other m Extensive hemosiderin-laden macrophages were present in lung tissue of nine (5%) infants -- a finding indicating major pulmonary hemorrhage preceding death.
When the cause is left-sided heart failure there are often hemosiderin-laden macrophages within alveoli (heart failure cells) which can also be coughed up and
Clinical Information: Send specimens urgently. Include all pertinent clinical glands (typically inactive or proliferative type), endometrial stroma surrounding the glands, and hemosiderin deposition or hemosiderin-laden macrophages. Pulmonary congestion with dilated capillaries and leakage of blood into alveolar spaces leads to an increase in hemosiderin-laden macrophages, as seen here. Close. Indian J Med Microbiol. Figure 1: A large number of hemosiderin-laden macrophages and foci of fresh hemorrhage were determined.
However, large marked depositions as here reported are rare. Hemosiderin formation was also studied in vitro. Macrophages containing hemosiderin were first seen in tracheal aspirates 50 hours after an acute pulmonary hemorrhage and after 72 hours in cultured macrophages. A small percentage of the PAM recovered by bronchoalveolar lavage from both adults and children contained hemosiderin. The accumulation of yellow-brown, haemosiderin-laden, pigmented macrophages (“smokers’ macrophages”) within the lumens of respiratory bronchioles and into the peribronchiolar alveolar spaces is seen very frequently and in the great majority of cases secondary to a cigarette smoking habit [8–11]. Macrophages initially fill the lumen of the respiratory bronchioles and peribronchiolar alveoli leading to a specific type of bronchiolitis, namely respiratory bronchiolitis.

An increase in the amount of hemosiderin within the bone marrow is recorded as (increased) pigment.
